How to use Quartet
Quartet finds aircraft in Sentinel-2 satellite imagery — a moving plane leaves four colored dots in a line, while ground objects stay a single point. Draw an area, pick a date, and search.
1. Draw an area
Rectangle tool — click the square icon at the top-left of the map, then drag to draw. A new rectangle replaces the old one.
Up to 500,000 km². Airports and busy traffic corridors have the most aircraft.
Search bar — type a place name or coordinates ("51.47, -0.45") to jump there.
Save this area — click the bookmark icon on the drawn rectangle to store it in Saved Areas for reuse.
2. Pick a date
The calendar fills with Sentinel-2 dates for your area. Green = within your cloud limit, orange = over it.
Max cloud / Min coverage sliders filter which dates qualify.
Batch — switch to Batch and pick a start–end range to search every day with imagery in the window; tick the skip-cloud / skip-coverage boxes to drop cloudy or low-coverage days.
3. Search
Hit Search for Aircraft. It runs on the server, so you can close the tab — you'll get an email with a link, and it appears on the My Tasks page. Results load on the map when it finishes.
ADS-B (optional toggle) — cross-checks detections against historical flight tracks. Result tabs split them into Found / Missed / Unmatched (unmatched are often military or non-transponding aircraft — or false detections).
4. Read results
Zoom in and each detection shows four colored squares (the band positions) inside a box; zoom out and it collapses to a single plane icon. Sidebar cards show speed, heading, and a thumbnail — click one to zoom to it.
Confidence slider filters by ML score (default 90%). Export opens a page to download the filtered set as CSV, GeoJSON, or KML.
Copernicus ↗ on any card opens that spot in Copernicus Browser to verify it against the raw imagery.
Opacity / Gain / Gamma sliders (shown when viewing a task) adjust the imagery overlay.
Map tools
Basemap — switch between Streets and Satellite in the control at the map's top-right.
Measure — the ruler button draws a multi-point line and totals the distance.
Right-click the map to copy coordinates or open the spot in Copernicus Browser.
Manage & save
My Tasks — every search, organized into folders. Per row: view results, copy a link (sign-in required — not public), reopen the area to search a new date, add notes, rename, or archive (a reversible soft-delete).
Saved Areas (header menu) — bookmark an area; loading one jumps to its most recent imagery.
Imagery: Sentinel-2 L2A (ESA / Copernicus) via Element 84, Microsoft Planetary Computer, and CDSE.
